Saint-Nazaire

 5 - 7 November 2015

We arrived in Saint-Nazaire, an industrial town and the south end of the Côte d'Amour. One of its claims to fame is that Tintin visited in the Seven Crystal Balls. They have posters showing different scenes around the town.

And some minutes later...
And now, Captain, will you finally tell me where we're going?
To Saint-Nazaire!

Kebabs is one of the cheapest ways to eat out in France. Meals for less than 6 euros :-D

Saint-Nazaire was shelled flat during WWII (the British dropped leaflets warning the citizens, so most evacuated and there was comparatively little loss of civilian life, however it's also the place where the greatest number of British soldiers lost their lives during the war) so it's reasonably modern, with most buildings 1950s or later.

Basically, all the touristy things in St Nazaire are closed except on Sundays atm (open much more frequently in spring and summer) so when we asked our host what to do he basically said day trip around the coast!

However the weather was terrible, so we had a rainy walk around town instead.

There's a fountain in the middle of this lake. We thought it was wet enough already.

The old German submarine base, from when France was occupied during WWII.
Finn said the flags along the top symbolise the many layers of French government and bureaucracy.

European union

France

The region: Pays de la Loire

The department: Loire Atlantique

The area: Carene - Saint-Nazaire Agglomération

The city: Saint-Nazaire port d'attaché(s) (home port)

And the Breton flag

The view from the top of the submarine base might have been better on a sunny day.

Our first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean

The base itself was quite interesting.

Finn sees sheep everywhere. Apparently the white marks on the wall are street art representing sheep.

And the trees on the top of this massive concrete structure. "They're not dead, just sleeping for the winter" says Finn.

I tried to take some panoramic shots to show you what the town looks like.

And just as we're about to leave, the sun comes out!
